The wall was a winning issue for Trump in 2016 – If Democrats stretch this fight towards 2020, it will be a winning issue again for Trump.

Well, here we go.

As expected, Trump declared a National Emergency on Friday and we are about to see a series of lawsuits and legal challenges which could very well take months or even longer to sort out.

In fact, Trump even joked about this during his Friday press conference when he mocked how the lawsuits will go back and forth until he finally gets a “fair shake” in the Supreme Court and ultimately wins.

But what might be lost on Democrats at this point is the fact that building the wall was a winning issue for Trump during the 2016 campaign. So much so that it became a chant at various rallies and other events. It even became a meme and a tag line for Trump supporters. So the fact that Trump won the election while building the wall was such a centerpiece of his campaign proves that it’s a winning issue for him.

So looking at this from a strictly political point of view, Trump actually wins points if Democrats decide to drag this fight out so that it’s still going on during the early part of the 2020 campaign. If the wall was a winning issue in 2016 and a losing issue for Democrats, the same will hold true in 2020.

If Democrats just gave Trump his money for the wall, it would simply start getting built and for the most part, Trump would lose that issue as a campaign centerpiece. Sure, he could show it as a victory, but most campaigns are based on what you are going to do, not what you already did. So politically, Trump can simply beat the same drum this time around like he did in 2016. Fight for the wall and paint the Democrats as the party that wants to have open borders. It worked in 2016 and it will work in 2020. The political divisions in this country haven’t really changed at all.

Politics can sometimes be a game of “what have you done for me lately?” That’s why handing your opponent a victory isn’t always a bad thing because it takes away one of their rallying cries. If Democrats simply gave Trump the $5.7 billion, you actually would hear much less about the wall during the upcoming 2020 election. In fact, Democrats could actually rally their base by saying they are going to undo whatever  Trump was building.

So overall from a strictly political standpoint, this new border wall fight that will go to the courts could turn out to be a winner for Trump. He will most likely ultimately get his funding, at least according to most legal experts, and he can still campaign on building the wall in the lead up to the 2020 campaign.
